Types of affiliate fraud
Operators frequently encounter fake or low-quality traffic, self-referral and self-exclusion bypass, and commission manipulation. As the network grows, transparency and fast intervention become critical.
The four most common patterns:
1. Incentivized traffic
The partner drives signups by promising the player an additional reward of their own. Volume looks high, but the arriving player was interested in the partner's offer rather than the operator. They do not return after the first deposit.
2. Self-referral
The partner registers their own accounts, or those of people close to them, through their own link. At small scale it goes unnoticed; as commission payments grow, the pattern becomes clear.
3. Bots and click fraud
Generating clicks that correspond to no real user, particularly under a CPC model. The ratio between click count and registration count breaks down abnormally.
4. Source obfuscation
Hiding the real source of traffic. Presenting traffic from a contractually prohibited channel, such as search ads on the brand name, as if it were organic.
Early warning signals
| Signal | What it can mean |
|---|---|
| High clicks, low registrations | Bots or click fraud |
| High registrations, low first deposits | Incentivized or irrelevant traffic |
| A first deposit but no second | Bonus-hunter traffic |
| The same device or IP cluster | Self-referral or multi-accounting |
| A sudden volume spike on one partner | A source change or manipulation |
None of these is proof on its own. But when two of them appear on the same partner, that is enough to open a review.
Why link masking matters here
Affiliate links that break when a domain or landing page changes cost both revenue and partner trust. CoCrm.ai manages redirection centrally through link masking, minimising traffic loss when a domain changes.
There is a fraud benefit too: because all traffic passes through central redirection, source, volume and conversion are measured in one place. You are not forced to rely on the partner's own reporting.
Control through the CRM
An affiliate CRM brings clicks, conversions, commissions and suspicious sources into a single panel. Used together with the risk engine, suspicious partners and traffic sources surface earlier, and critically, they surface before commission is paid.
The approach that works in practice has three steps:
- Measure — track clicks, registrations, first deposits and second deposits separately for every partner
- Compare — benchmark a partner against their own history rather than the network average
- Adjust the model — move a partner with a persistent quality problem from CPA to RevShare
The third step is the most effective: under RevShare the partner becomes a stakeholder in the player's long-term value, and the appeal of generating short-term volume falls away on its own.
